Avast Warning
Avast can delete your Kitomba data
Avast, a free anti-virus programme, could cause you to lose your Kitomba data. Avast has made a recent change and it now thinks that Kitomba is suspicious and deletes all of your data when you close Kitomba. Read on to stop this happening.
First take a back-up now.
Go to the Help Tab and click on “Send us a back-up”.

Next, determine if you’re running Avast.
![]()
To do this, look for the round orange icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen next to the time.
Or, go to Start> All Programs and look for the name “Avast” or the Avast logo, which looks like this:

Or you may have seen this pop-up box when you started Kitomba:

On this pop-up you can see the recommended default is to open in “sandbox”. When you click ‘OK’ Avast takes control of where the Kitomba data goes and doesn’t write it to the Kitomba directory. This means that if you start Kitomba in the morning, click ‘OK’, at the end of the day when you shut Kitomba down all the data will be erased from Kitomba.
How to can stop this happening.
We have to change the Avast settings to make Kitomba an exception and turn “sandboxing” off.
Here are the steps:
- Open Avast from the icon in the corner of your screen or from the Start Menu
- Click on ‘Additional protection’, then ‘AutoSandbox’
You should see the box below:

- Add C:\Program Files\Kitomba\Kitomba.exe and C:\Program Files\Kitomba\RunKitomba.bat as exclusions, and click OK.
- If you are being prompted for a directory to exclude (not a file) then add C:\Program Files\Kitomba and click OK.
That sets the exclusion. Now we need to turn off “sandboxing”.
- Go back into ‘AutoSandbox’ and untick ‘Enable AutoSandbox’.
Done.
